Cargill introduces Zerose™ erythritol to food and beverage manufacturers in China

CHINA - 22 September 2008
- Cargill is pleased to introduce its Zerose™ erythritol to China’s leading food and beverage manufacturers after obtaining regulatory approval for Zerose™ erythritol with no restriction on its applications.  Cargill gave an overview of the seemingly endless new product development and marketing possibilities during a technical seminar for food manufacturers and formulators held on 22 Sept. in Shanghai. A similar seminar will soon be held in Guangzhou.

Zerose™ erythritol is a natural, non-caloric bulk sweetener alternative to sugar.  Erythritol, also known as polyol or sugar alcohol, is a white crystalline powder that is odorless, with a clean sweet taste that is similar to sucrose.  Unlike other polyols which have lower tolerance for a laxative effect, Zerose™ erythritol is well tolerated.  As a result, foods containing erythritol are unlikely to cause gas or laxation when consumed at customary serving sizes.  An organic version of Zerose™ erythritol is also available to Chinese manufacturers.

Zerose™ erythritol appeals to consumers who want to manage their weight or sugar intake because although it tastes like sugar, Zerose™ erythritol has zero calories and no aftertaste. It is also non-glycemic and non-insulinemic, making it a useful sugar alternative for people on diabetic diets.  Because it is not a saccharide or simple sugars substrate, Zerose™ erythritol is resistant to metabolism by oral bacteria and thus does not promote tooth decay.

During the seminar, Cargill representatives introduced the functional and nutritional benefits of Zerose™ erythritol and unveiled a wide range of application capabilities including confections, beverages, jellies and jelly drinks, tabletop sweeteners and oral care.  “Zerose™ erythritol offers a solution to both health and indulgence,” says Steven Tung, Cargill sales manager (Greater China). “The ultimate winners will be food manufacturers who can combine zero calorie properties with excellent taste, satisfying mouthfeel and an appeal to the growing healthy-lifestyle Chinese market.”
