Cargill Debuts Exciting New Functional Foods and Beverages at IFT 2004 Annual Meeting & Food Expo®

LAS VEGAS - July 13, 2004 - Cargill Health & Food Technologies (H&FT) will debut a number of great tasting functional food and beverage prototypes incorporating some of its most exciting ingredients at the upcoming IFT 2004 Annual Meeting & Food Expo® July 13-16 in Las Vegas at booth # 1543.

Attendees will have the opportunity to sample a concept beverage that resembles something you would see on the retail store shelf called JointWise™, a joint health beverage containing OptaFlex™ chondroitin. It was announced July 9 that OptaFlex™ chondroitin was self-affirmed as GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) through an independent evaluation by an expert panel of respected scientists. The product is uniquely suited to beverage applications because it is manufactured using a natural, proprietary water-based process.

“The functional beverage segment is one of the most innovative in the industry,” said Steve Snyder, Cargill H&FT vice president of sales and marketing. “We used consumer insight to develop the JointWise™ beverage concept. This sports drink concept tastes great and meets the consumers demand for joint health solutions. Our goal in creating the JointWise™ beverage for IFT is to showcase the potential that exists for new, tasty functional beverages,” he said.

A number of additional products will be featured that address some of today’s most pressing health concerns and key market trends:

  • Heart Health – Raspberry smoothie and cranberry almond bar made with CoroWise™ plant sterols. The Food and Drug Administration’s heart health claim states: “plant sterols may help reduce the risk of heart disease when 0.4 grams are consumed twice daily with meals, for a total intake of 0.8 grams, as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol.”

  • Lower Carb Lifestyle – Ice cream made with Oliggo-Fiber® inulin. Oliggo-Fiber® inulin is increasingly recognized as a key ingredient in lower-carb applications in addition to providing health benefits.

“Cargill is proud to showcase such a wide variety of product concepts at IFT,” said Ted Ziemann, president Cargill H&FT. “Our efforts support the goal of this conference by demonstrating what can be accomplished through consumer insight, technology and innovation. Product concepts showcased at previous IFT shows have yielded exciting functional foods and beverages that will have broad appeal to mainstream consumers.”
