Introduction
Oliggo-Fiber® inulin and oligofructose products are soluble dietary fibers that can be measured in foods by AOAC analytical methods. They are not digested and absorbed in the stomach or small intestine but arrive unaltered in the large intestine where they are fermented, with resultant short chain fatty acids, gases and increased numbers of beneficial bacteria. The particular soluble fiber properties of Oliggo-Fiber® inulin can result in improved intestinal functions like a bulking effect, relief of constipation, and digestive comfort.
Oliggo-Fiber® is a family of fructo-oligosaccharide molecules with different chain lengths or degrees of polymerization (DP) based on the number of fructosyl units. Native fructo-oligosaccharide molecules (Oliggo-Fiber® Instant and Standard Inulin) extracted from chicory range in length from 2 to 60 DP with the average length being 8-10. In addition, Cargill offers Oliggo-Fiber® products with differing functional properties and applications based on longer (average DP = 20) or shorter chain lengths.
