CoroWise™ Plant sterols

Introduction

Plant sterols, commonly referred to as plant sterols, are plant lipids that are naturally present in vegetables, fruits, and grains. Eating foods rich in plant sterols helps promote healthy blood cholesterol levels. When plant sterols reach the digestive tract, they block gastrointestinal absorption of dietary cholesterol into the bloodstream, thus lowering serum cholesterol.

FDA Health Claim

Daily consumption of a total of at least 0.8 grams of plant sterols in two meals may reduce the risk of heart disease when part of a diet low in fat and cholesterol. Based on a regulatory enforcement discretion letter to Cargill dated February 14, 2003, the FDA may now allow free plant sterols to bear the heart health claim and may expand the use of the claim to a broad range of foods and beverages.
