Cargill Health & Food Technologies Presents Product Prototypes at 2002 IFT Conference

Cargill Shows that Supplying Ingredients is just the Beginning

ANAHEIM - June 16, 2002 - Cargill Health & Food Technologies (HFT) presented product concepts focused on women's health, heart health and energy at the Institute of Food Technologists' Annual Meeting and Food Expo in Anaheim, Calif., this week. New products on display included a plant sterol ester chocolate drink, Sweet Life, and two lemon-lime concept drinks containing trehalose, Cruz Control and High Gear.

A visit to Cargill's IFT booth showed that Cargill Health & Food Technologies (HFT) is much more than an ingredient supplier. HFT provides proprietary science and technology for food applications, new product development, product prototype development and regulatory support. These resources have been leveraged to create new product concepts, such as Cruz Control and Sweet Life.

"These concept drinks are perfect showcases for Cargill HFT's two new ingredients because Cargill drew on its strong science and technology staff to develop them," HFT President Ted Ziemann said. "Cargill has a vast array of resources to offer its customers to help design products that meet the consumers' needs," he said.

The plant sterol esters contained in Sweet Life offer a safe and effective means of reducing cholesterol levels and improving cardiovascular health. Elevated blood cholesterol is a major risk factor for heart disease, which is responsible for 50 percent of all deaths in industrialized countries. "Many people are concerned about maintaining their heart health," Ziemann said. "Consuming plant sterol esters as part of a healthy diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol provides another natural option in the maintenance of cardiovascular health."

Cruz Control and High Gear contain trehalose, a type of sugar made from cornstarch which also occurs naturally in many plants and foods such as honey, lobster and yeast. This unique sugar has half the sweetness of sucrose and is now affordable and commercially available for the food industry. Trehalose is a breakthrough ingredient that provides an exceptional energy source and has a wide range of applications including nutrition bars and sports drinks, Ziemann said.
